Finnair Airlines Review

While searching for budget yet comfortable and shortest-duration flights from Delhi to Edinburgh I stumbled upon Finnair Airlines about which I hadn’t heard much back then. The flight to Edinburgh came with a short 4-hour layover at Helsinki Airport in Finland.

Normally Delhi to Helsinki flight is a ~7-hour flight that goes via Russia. But due to the Russian-Ukrainian war, the route was diverted and now the plane flew through Eastern Europe avoiding Ukraine. This makes the flight longer, almost a 9-hour journey just to reach Helsinki which is why I am super thankful for Finnair’s comfortable seats.

As I got to explore a new airline and a different airport, I was already excited even before the journey commenced. Here’s my amazing experience with the flights and my detailed Finnair Airlines Review.

Finnair Economy Class Seats

Delhi to Helsinki

I had no idea how happy I’d be as I boarded the late-night economy-class flight from Delhi, India. I realised the flight had a 3-3-3 seat design that was much more spacious than the other flights I have travelled to date.

While looking outside at the window I felt pretty comfortable when I settled in my Finnair economy class seat.

If someone asks me “Are Finnar seats comfortable?” I would reply they’re extremely comfortable with quite a spacious leg space. There are different kinds of seats available even in Economy class if you’re looking for more leg space.

Since I started flying with them, Finnair Airlines Economy Class seats never disappointed me.

On long-haul flights, they also provide a pillow and blanket which is sufficient enough for a 9-hour journey. I have never needed any extra blanket, 1 blanket was cosy enough since the temperature inside the flight is usually balanced. A small water is also kept on the seat before boarding.

Helsinki to Edinburgh

Within Europe, Finnair is a frequent carrier and operates on smaller flights. But the flights are not the typical 3X3 style but they have a much spacious 2X2 style which I loved. Generally, no meal is served on this flight, but the standard blueberry juice is provided.

The Entertainment System

On long-haul flights entertainment system is a requirement and leaves us out of necessity to download personal choice for movies/series on our phones or tablets. I downloaded my preferences before my first trip via Finnair Airlines flight but when I browsed the Finnair collection I didn’t have to watch the downloaded one.

On the internal Europe flight between Helsinki & Edinburgh Finnair doesn’t provide entertainment, which I think is fine for a short journey. Would I love it if provided? Absolutely!! But I understand on smaller flights it might not be feasible for the airlines.

Finnair Airlines Wifi

On long-haul flights, Finnair Airlines provides paid Wifi for Economy and complimentary minutes for Premier Economy and Business class. The internet is a bit patchy and keeps disconnecting several times. The wifi comes at a decent cost, but ideally, the connectivity could be improved.

The Cabin Crew

In the hospitality industry cabin crew are trained to maintain a calm demeanour, but some airlines go a long way when it comes to having a friendly staff. Finnair is one of them, the staff is quite friendly overall, never hesitate to even chat with a big smile on their face.

Finnair Airlines Flight Food

Finnair Economy Class

Finnair Airlines is a premium airline and their food is a trademark for that. Food is available for free on every international trip, except on inter-Europe trips (only blueberry juice is served).

Every trip I took, I was satiated with the flavours of the food. They generally serve 1 meal on the long haul flight with soda, coffee/tea or 1 alcoholic beverage. Since it is an airline from Finland they also serve their authentic Blueberry juice, and believe me you do not want to miss out on that.

They also serve a small snack meal which is mostly a pastry with tea coffee or juice. Alcoholic drinks are not served with snacks. All of this comes with water if you’d like at any time.

If there is anything I do not like to eat, I generally don’t open the package or keep it to myself so that it is not thrown in the bin. As responsible tourists, we should do our part in whatever ways we can.

Finnair Business Class – Edinburgh -> Helsinki

On my last trip using my Finnair points, I bumped myself up from Economy class to Business class for my flight between Edinburgh and Helsinki. I assumed it would be a bigger plane and I would get to experience the real luxury of Business class. I was a tad bit disappointed as I got ahead of myself. Nonetheless, it doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy the journey or the Business class perks 😀

I was among the first ones to be seated in the plane which felt super amazing. The plane was a bigger one with a 3X3 seating style but the middle seat was purposely kept empty to give us space.

We were given warm tissue for freshening up and it was so refreshing that I immediately felt so good.

A little later the food was served in silverware with unlimited drinks. I only had one blueberry juice. I had low expectations from the food served on the planes but Oh Gosh, the food served in the business was one of the most delicious pasta I ever had. The journey otherwise was pretty normal since the plane didn’t have any entertainment.

Finnair Premier Economy Class: Helsinki -> Delhi

On my last flight from Edinburgh to Delhi between Helsinki to Delhi I used my Finnair points to bump myself from Economy to Premier Economy class. Finnair has recently launched Premier Economy Class on selected routes and I was so happy to travel in a class other than Economy. Not that Finnair’s Economy class is bad, but I do love luxury now and then especially when I can use my points 🙂

In Finnair’s Premier Economy Class, the seats are much roomy with better neck pillows, blankets & noise cancelling headphones. I thought I was living a privileged life and felt so grateful just to be there.

When the flight starts the cabin crew gives us a warm napkin to wash our hands/freshen up. Once we’re a bit more settled, the crew asks us about any particular preference we have in terms of food or drinks. I got Indian food – rice & lentil curry with wine and of course, blueberry juice 😀 To top this up an amazing dessert gave me food coma. The best part was even here the food was served in silverware and it looked so amazing.

Once I was done with my food and drinks, a crew member checked up on me in case I wanted any extra drinks, WOW I didn’t expect that. Although I declined, but felt great to get extra drinks just in case I wanted to.

I do have a problem sleeping on the flights, and with the comfiest seats I have travelled to date, I was still struggling to fall asleep. I asked the cabin crew if they had any chamomile tea, they didn’t but they had an herbal tea which I tried to sleep. Well, nothing helped, but I so much appreciate them trying.

Finnair Premier Economy Class have a separate lavatory and since only a few of the passengers were in this class the lavatory was pretty clean. Not to mention it was much more generous in size and didn’t feel cramped up at all.

Finnair Airlines Flight Ticket Price

Despite being a premium airline, the ticket prices are pretty decent for Finnair Airlines flights. For my economy class flight, the ticket for economy class ranges from 550$ (55000₹) for Delhi to Edinburgh. I chose the Flexi ticket (a tad bit higher price) which gives me the option to change flight tickets if required without any charges other than price difference. Believe me, if your plans are jittery this is something worth paying for.

How to book a Finnair Flight?

A lot of people use Skyscanner, I use it too sometimes but Finnair’s website is quite stunning in terms of showing the best rates. When selecting the dates for your trip, there’s a checkbox for “Dates are flexible”. If we check this Flexi dates option Finnair website pops up a small window that displays the best rates for the week.

This is the feature I have used every time to pick the dates where I get the best bang for my buck. If you’re booking a Finnair flight, do give this feature a try

Final Words on Finnair Airlines Review

When given the option to choose to travel to Europe or the UK, I would always choose Finnair flights. I am their permanent customer now 🙂 Impeccable service, comfiest seats and amazing amenities make me choose them over and over again.
