Planning to visit Sangla Valley? Delhi to Sangla Valley is less than 600 km and is a perfect relaxing getaway for a long weekend. The way towards Sangla Valley is not only one of the most gorgeous road trips but also the world’s deadliest roads. Here’s my detailed guide on how to reach Sangla Valley from Delhi with all options included.

Sangla Valley – Quick Overview

Sangla Valley is in the upper Kinnaur district with a small village in Himachal Pradesh, India. A valley surrounded by snow-capped mountains covered with Deodar trees and a river at its foot, the village is natural beauty at its best. The high altitude of the upper Himalayan gives the land a suitable environment for apple plantation and wherever you roll your eyes the apple farms are easily spotted. Friendly locals, a hint of Tibetan culture is Sangla for tourists and a mountain lover’s paradise. Being a photography lover I captured tons of pictures not only in Sangla valley but also on the entire route from Delhi to Sangla valley.

After finally deciding on a 3-day trip to Sangla Valley, we referred to Google Maps predicting a 14+ hour journey from Delhi. Travelling with family, we preferred hiring a cab over self-driving — the roads through upper Kinnaur are genuinely difficult, and unless you’re an experienced mountain driver, it’s not the place to learn.

We are a firm believer in enjoying the stunning landscape than focusing on the drive. The roads in the upper Kinnaur in Himachal Pradesh are some of the World’s Deadliest Roads and if you’re not an experienced driver in steep mountains it’s advisable to not drive on your own. Still, fancy a drive on your own…? Then, read more from Helena’s road trip to gain some insight and tips that might prove fruitful before embarking on your journey from Delhi to Sangla Valley.

Because we were not driving ourselves, we planned & started from Delhi to Sangla Valley at night around 22h30. Crossed Chandigarh by 03h30 and once we touched the hilly area the speed dropped by half. We drove non-stop for almost another 3 hours, stopping around Shimla for morning tea and then reached Narkanda where we found the lovely nature camp. Tired of such a long drive with minimal breaks we were literally exhausted by the time we reached our destination around 14h00.

How to reach Sangla Valley from Delhi

Sangla Valley is one remote corner of Himachal Pradesh and so how to reach Sangla Valley from Delhi can be a daunting question and may require proper planning, especially when travelling with family. I am a planner, love to carve out the details and evaluate all the options which I am listing down below. Keep reading to know these might help you you in planning your trip as well.

Options on how to reach Sangla Valley from Delhi

1. By Car

If anyone asks me how to reach Sangla Valley from Delhi, I’d say driving is one of the best ways to do it — provided you’re prepared for a long day. It’s roughly a 14-16 hour journey by road, longer than Google Maps’ initial estimate once you factor in mountain speeds and stops. The main route runs:

Delhi → Chandigarh → Shimla → Kufri → Narkanda → Rampur → Karcham → Sangla

An alternate route swaps in Manali instead of Shimla, but that path runs through Rohtang Pass, which is closed for a good part of the year and adds its own driving difficulty — not ideal if you’re prioritising Sangla itself.

The Car

The Car We drove a Maruti Suzuki Dzire (sedan), which made for a rougher ride than we expected on the mountain stretches. If you’re not in an SUV or don’t enjoy long drives, I’d strongly recommend splitting the journey with an overnight stop around Shimla, Kufri or Narkanda — all three are established tourist towns with good stay options, and it turns a gruelling single push into a much more enjoyable two-day drive.

The route is genuinely one of the most photogenic in Himachal — pack a proper camera or a dash cam, since a phone alone won’t do justice to the scale of it – check out some of the best cameras.

2. By Train

Sangla Valley itself has no direct train access — it’s still developing, and its altitude and terrain rule out a rail line. But you can cover a meaningful stretch of the Delhi-Sangla distance by train if you want a scenic hybrid journey. Thinking about How to reach Sangla Valley from Delhi and if you want to include a train journey too, you have options:

Delhi → Kalka: ~6 hours by regular train (Himalayan Queen, Kalka Shatabdi, and others run this route)

Kalka → Shimla: ~5 hours on the UNESCO-listed Kalka-Shimla toy train, averaging about 18 km/h

Shimla → Sangla: ~6-7 hours by bus or private cab, covering the remaining distance through Rampur and Karcham

If you want the “how to reach Sangla Valley comfortably with great views” version, this train-plus-cab combination is probably my top pick — it breaks up the drive and adds a genuinely memorable leg through the Shivalik foothills.

Upon reaching Shimla, you may take a bus or hire a private cab for the journey to Sangla Valley. Although cars are ideal, if asked how to reach Sangla Valley comfortably with the advantage of incredible views, I would probably choose trains.

3. By Flight

Two airports get you roughly halfway from Delhi to Sangla:

Kullu Airport (Bhuntar), near Manali: a workable alternative if you’re combining Sangla with a Kullu-Manali leg

Shimla Airport (Jubbarhatti): the closer and more commonly used option, about 15 km from Shimla town

From either airport, you’ll need a bus or private taxi to cover the remaining 6-8 hours to Sangla. Chances are you will not find fancy volvo buses running at this route. And travelling in those Himachal roadways buses is not for the faint hearted.

There’s also a helipad at Rampur that some travellers use, though it typically costs more and needs advance arrangement.

Flights are the best pick if you’re short on time and want to reach the offbeat beauty of Kinnaur without burning a full day and night on the road.

4. By Bus

Sangla Valley is almost cut off from the parts of the country in terms of no direct medium to reach there.

As of 2026, there’s no direct bus from Delhi straight to Sangla — the journey needs to be broken into legs. Himachal Roadways runs Volvo buses from Delhi (mostly to Shimla or Rampur), and from Shimla, HRTC buses continue on to Sangla.

The Volvo (AC) buses are comfortable and reasonably driven; the non-AC options are rougher but have open windows, which some travellers actually prefer if they’re prone to motion sickness on the winding sections. It’s no mystery that I’m not a bus-travel person, but it is the most budget friendly mode to reach Sangla Valley from Delhi.

A rough one-way, per-person estimate for a mid-range trip:

Fuel, food stops, and an overnight halt (if you’re splitting the drive) will add to this — budget an extra ₹2,000-4,000 for a comfortable stopover in Shimla or Kufri or even scenic Narkanda.
