Flying into another part of the world with a short layover at Doha’s Hamid International Airport? I did too when flying from Delhi in India to my first solo trip to Paris. With a 4-hour layover at the Doha Airport, I knew I stand no chance of taking a short trip to Doha. I then tried to pass my time which I found the hard way, it’s not easy to do so. The airport is huge, and I almost miss my connecting flight to Paris hanging out on the other side of the airport. So, I’m putting together numerous things to do during your Doha Airport Layover.
Since then I’ve kept researching and updating this guide, because Hamad International has genuinely grown into a destination of its own — with a lot more to do than there was back when I first passed through. Whether you’ve got 3 hours or 12+, here’s exactly what to do with your time.
Quick answer: If your layover is under 6 hours, stay inside the terminal — there’s more than enough to keep you busy. If it’s 6+ hours, you can realistically consider stepping out into Doha itself. Read on for the breakdown by duration.
Can You Leave Doha Airport on a Layover?
If your layover is under 6 hours, I’d honestly stay inside the terminal — between immigration on the way out, transit time, and security again on the way back in, you’ll be cutting it close. But if you’ve got 6+ hours, Hamad International makes it surprisingly easy to step out and see the city.
Most nationalities, including Indian passport holders on select routings, can enter Qatar visa-free or get a visa on arrival for short stays — but entry rules do change, so confirm your specific requirements with Qatar Airways or the Discover Qatar desk before you land, rather than relying on anything you’ve read online, including this. Budget at least an hour for immigration on the way out and 90 minutes to clear security again when you re-enter for your connecting flight.
What to do during Doha Airport Layover (Under 6 hours)
When my flight plan to Paris came up with a short 4-hour layover at the Doha Airport, I searched a bit but couldn’t find much on how to pass time. I knew it’ll be super boring for 4 hours because I knew I couldn’t shop at those insanely expensive *duty-free* shops. So, I’m putting together a list of all those things you can do to kill time on a layover in Doha, no matter if it’s 3, 4, 5 or even 6 hours. If you have more than a 6-hour layover, I suggest taking a ride & go out and exploring this beautiful city, there are numerous things to do in Doha. Or you may stay at some of the wonderful hotels simply to relax.

Get a picture with the Giant Bear
Hamid International Airport was rated 4-star hospitality & charts under the top 10 in the Skytrax World Airport Awards. The very centre of the airport is humanized by placing a giant yellow teddy bear. Yes, you read that right, a yellow teddy bear – go looking for this adorable one after getting past the security during your Doha Stopover. Layover in Doha doesn’t have to be boring right? This 23-foot-tall yellow teddy bear sculpture called the Lamp Bear was designed by Swiss Artist Urs Fischer. Once you clear immigration, it is impossible to miss the teddy.
Savour delicious world-renowned dishes
I’m sure you must be feeling hungry in between all those security clearances and hunting for the bear. I remember I was! And not only ravenous but I was craving a caffeinated drink. After clicking some pictures with the bear, I headed to the food court. I can say with some certainty, it wasn’t easy to find, Doha Airport is quite huge after all. There I spotted Burger King, Qataf Cafe and many more. I grabbed a coffee from SOHO Coffee, but struggled to find anything vegetarian, since I was vegetarian at the time.
But I spotted Jamocha Cafe, a European café, with a variety of vegetarian dishes – tucked away from the main food court near the gates. I found it when I was heading for my connecting flight. Also, it was the only café which returned me the balance in Euros. The others were accepting Euros but returning only in Qatari Riyals, which was not much of use to me. Although they did return me an extremely small number in Riyals because cents were unavailable. I happily took the QAR to keep that as a souvenir from my Doha stopover.
The takeaway: try some international cuisine at the food court, but don’t be shy about exploring the quieter corners of the terminal too — that’s often where the better finds are.
Relax at The Vitality Wellbeing & Fitness Centre
If you had a long and tiring journey to Doha’s Hamid International Airport, I’d recommend relaxing at the Vitality Wellbeing & Fitness Centre. They offer some reinvigorating spas & body massages to get rid of the annoying jet-lagged. With entry at 175 QAR, I can say you will find yourself reposing easily. With facilities like a Hydrotherapy tub, Gym, indoor swimming pool & also a shower room, the Fitness centre is your best bet for unwinding.
Explore & Shop at those dreamy Duty-Free Shops
Who doesn’t like to window-shop at the *duty-free* shops at the airports? Even when they are insanely expensive, they charm us with their extravagant & lavish decor. I hardly shop at these shops, but window shopping is fun, right? It’s nice to cover the bases 😉 Some airports also host local brands with discounts going on, you might find an amazing souvenir. I remember I bought my first power bank at an International Airport which is still going strong. So, if you still have some time to kill, explore the shop, and who knows you might find something amazing.
Unwind at the Activity Nodes
If you’re travelling with your family or children, you’ll find these activity nodes useful. The airport has put up 5 activity nodes in Concourse A, B & C inside the passenger terminal. They have televisions set up, internet & MAC stations, and interactive art pieces to help you connect with your loved ones. I remember having a video call with my mum when I was at the airport. It’s best to keep your family informed especially when you’re travelling solo like me.
I would suggest trying some of these things and you’ll not know how promptly these 4 or 5 hours passed. These activities also help you to relax after a long journey & prepare for your next one. So, don’t get bored, now you know how to utilize your time at the Doha Airport Layover.
What to Do on a Long Layover (6+ Hours) — Leaving the Airport
Discover Qatar Transit Tours
One thing I wish I’d known on my own layover: Qatar Airways and the Qatar Tourism Authority run guided transit tours for eligible passengers, often complimentary or low-cost. Tours typically cover the Museum of Islamic Art, Katara Cultural Village, and the alleys of Souq Waqif, timed carefully to get you back well before boarding. Head to the Discover Qatar desk near the main duty-free zone as soon as you clear immigration to check availability — slots fill up fast, especially during peak travel periods.
Independent Trip to Souq Waqif or the Corniche
So, these are my recommendations about how to kill time during Doha Airport Layover for a few hours or more. If you’d rather explore at your own pace, Souq Waqif is Doha’s traditional market and an easy taxi ride from the airport — expect spices, textiles, handicrafts, and even falconry displays. The Corniche, Doha’s waterfront promenade, is another good option if you want skyline views and a slower pace. What to Do on a Very Long Layover (10–12+ Hours)
The Orchard
If you’ve got a longer layover and want a break from the shopping-mall energy of the terminal, The Orchard is worth seeking out — an indoor tropical garden with water features, greenery, and quiet seating. It’s one of Hamad’s newer additions and a genuinely calming spot to decompress before a long-haul flight, especially useful if you’re travelling with kids or just need a break from the fluorescent lighting and duty-free noise.

Desert Safari Day Trip
For a 10+ hour layover, some travellers turn it into a mini adventure with a half-day desert excursion to Khor Al Adaid, Qatar’s “Inland Sea.” Local operators run these as day trips built around layover timing. Check current availability through the Discover Qatar desk or a reputable Tripadvisor-listed operator before booking, and always leave a generous buffer to get back through security.
Where to Rest
If you’re facing an overnight or very long layover, the Oryx Airport Hotel sits inside the secure transit area, a short walk from the Lamp Bear, with rooms bookable by the hour or overnight. If you’re on a tighter budget, compact sleep pods are also available for a few hours of horizontal rest between flights.
