Baoli is nothing but a water channel used to preserve water in the historic era. Baoli’s were a medium to preserve water for adverse weather like droughts. In India, there are a number of Baoli’s and Delhi itself has as much as 30 Baoli’s. Among those, the most famous among all is the Agrasen ki Baoli aka Ugrasen Ki Baoli.
Agrasen Ki Baoli History
Agrasen ki Baoli consists of a 60-meters long and 15-meters wide well for storing rainwater and has 108 steps till the depth of the well. The Agrasen ki Baoli got its name from Maharaja Agrasen who built the step well during the Mahabharata times. Later on, the rich Aggarwal community renovated the structure considering being the descendants of the King Agrasen.
The present structure of the baoli is typically Mughal style and believed to be rebuilt under Tuqhlaq’s empire in the 14th century. The Archeological Survey of India(ASI) now undertakes the monument. The same undertaking which maintains the iconic Humayun Tomb.
