Jojo Moyes’s Me Before You Book Review.

Me before you – This was one of the best books I have read which left me speechless rather than in tears. Although, I did cry after watching its movie, but the novel left me with a number of thoughts.

It is a love story with motivation, bravery, and continuous effort for sustaining one’s life. The story revolves around Louisa Clark and Will Traynor. Will – a witty and wealthy man – is quadriplegic who had a motorbike accident 3 years ago and now has no desire to live. Will’s mother, Camilla Traynor employs Lou (Louisa) as a care assistant (for 6 months) for Will who may change his mind by boosting his morale. After trying very hard to drift Lou apart, Will and Lou ended up becoming good friends and eventually fell for each other. When Lou finds out about Will’s desire to end his life, she takes it as a mission to motivate him to live. On the other hand, Will also keep on encouraging Lou to do something constructive with her life as he said – “You’ve done nothing, been nowhere. How do you have the faintest idea what kind of person you are”? After five months of struggle, Lou finally convinces Will to go on a trip where Lou tells him that she knows about his decision and also opens her heart to him. But, Lou is unable to persuade Will to live which breaks her heart and decided not to support him in this. But finally, she realizes that love is not about enforcing your choices on the one you love and then she visits him to Switzerland where they part ways for always. Will leaves a good amount of money and a portion in his property for Lou’s better life and further studies.

What I liked about the book:

  1. I completely loved the writing of the book which left me engaged. The book is so alluring that I couldn’t just put it down.
  2. The characters in the story were just apt and each character had an important role which made the book an interesting read.
  3. There was never a moment when I felt that the story is going too slow.
  4. I loved Lou’s and Will’s role just like two friends falling in love without even noticing that. Their conversations – Will’s sarcasm and Lou’s responses made me laugh throughout the book.

What I didn’t like:

  1. It left me thinking that whether it is right to end your life for disabled – shouldn’t they be allowed to live. Although, I agree that Will had an amazing life before his accident, with a loving family and a supporting partner, a person can live and live well.

I kept praying that something will happen magically to cure Will, which in some parts made me sad as well, but life’s tough and not a fairy tale 😐

Let me know your thoughts on the same.
