Despite being single, I dream about a magical honeymoon. Apart from my routined bucket-list, I have listed a few places where I want to be with my life partner. Thinking of honeymoon, I want to go someplace unique. So, I present my list of some dreamy, magical and unusual honeymoon destinations in the world.

Unusual Honeymoon Destinations in the World

  • Greece

Greece is a country rich in history and antiquity of course that is not something you would look for when choosing an unusual honeymoon destination. But away from the mainland of Greece are these gorgeous Greek islands which make for a  perfect honeymoon destination.

Santorini

One of the most beautiful Greek islands is Santorini which can be reached from the Greece capital Athens by ferry or by flight. The island of Santorini located in the southern Aegean Sea is known for its whitewashed buildings perched on the cliffside overlooking the perpetual blue sea. Fira and Oia are the two major towns in Santorini, while Fira is a bit touristy with pubs and nightclubs, Oia is ideal for a laid-back experience and has one of the best sunset views in the world. There are several accommodations in Santorini which offers breathtaking views of the caldera and the sea.

One of the most romantic things to do in Santorini would be to do a sunset Catamaran tour with Greek food served onboard while you enjoy the views. Alternatively, go hiking and explore some of the best beaches and small towns of Santorini on a trail which has amazing views all along the route.

So, keep your options diversified and keep Greece on your list of unusual honeymoon destinations in the world.

  • South Africa

I know.. I know, no one wants to honeymoon in South Africa, after all, it is renowned for wild-life and Safari. But, I believe in doing something which not many do. Which is why South Africa is top of my list of the most unusual honeymoon destinations in the world. Don’t believe me blindly, hear Caitlyn’s take –

There are so many decisions that need to be made when planning a wedding and a honeymoon. For my husband and I, the decision on where to go for our honeymoon was the most important.

Safari

We chose to go to South Africa and it did not disappoint. We spent the first four nights at a luxury safari lodge, where we went on two game drives per day and saw the ‘Big 5’ by our third drive. In between drives, we lounged by the pool, went on bush walks, or got massages. Our room had large sliding doors that opened to a private deck with an outdoor shower that overlooked the bush. The staff and service were incredible. They even had the bath in our room ready for us after our first evening game drive and offered us a complimentary bottle of champagne. We enjoyed dinners and drinks with the rest of the guests, who quickly became friends. We shared stories under the African sky around a large communal table lit by a fire, paraffin lamps, and candles. It was a truly unforgettable experience.

Cape Town

After our safari, we headed to Cape Town for 4 nights. First, we rented a car and drove around the Cape Peninsula, seeing some of the most beautiful landscapes we’ve ever seen. We also saw ostriches, baboons, and penguins along the way! Afterward, we enjoyed some shopping and fine dining at the V&A waterfront.

Stellenbosch

The next day, we went to the Cape Winelands and enjoyed wine and chocolate tastings, and an amazing meal with spectacular views at Del Graffe Wine Estate in Stellenbosch. And to add one more dose of adventure to our trip, we went on a strenuous, yet rewarding hike up to the top of Table Mountain.

South Africa offers the perfect mix of adventure and luxury or relaxation to make for a truly romantic and memorable honeymoon.

  • Croatia

For me, Croatia is one of the most unusual honeymoon destinations in the world. But it’s not just unusual, it is much more stunning than we imagine. Don’t trust me? Hear it from Baia –

When thinking of a honeymoon destination, we most likely imagine crystal clear blue water, palm trees, and white sand. Even though this might be a perfect honeymoon for many, spending your first holiday as a newlywed to a completely new country with beautiful architecture, gorgeous beaches, and delicious seafood is not a bad idea, right? Croatia is exactly that.  Besides, if you are located somewhere close to Europe, Croatia is one of the cheapest options to honeymoon here.

Adriatic Sea

This gem of the Adriatic Sea has so much to offer to its traveler that it can get quite difficult to choose your vacation spot. The country has more than a thousand islands, so if you are keen on spending your honeymoon laying on the beach, sunbathing, and sipping on a Sex on the Beach cocktail, look into Hvar, Korcula, Losinj, or Brac islands.

Dubrovnik

For those of you who are more explorers and want to spend their time together wandering through narrow cobblestone streets of medieval towns, Dubrovnik, Korcula town, and Rovinj are some of the most stunning locations we have visited.

Zadar

Zadar is also a nice city, a bit off the beaten path compared to other famous locations of Croatia. Here, you can sit by the Sea Organ, listen to the song of the waves and enjoy ‘one of the most beautiful sunsets off all time’, according to Alfred Hitchcock. There are so many things to do in Zadar that you won’t feel it’s off beaten. Also, travelling off the beaten path means, you get to be a responsible tourist

  • Bali

Instagram-famous Bali, Indonesia is well known for its picturesque coastlines and luscious forests, making it the ultimate honeymoon destination. From energetic early morning hikes up volcanoes to relaxing in luxury jungle hideaways, and surfing meccas to high end dining there’s plenty to explore on this little island during your romantic escape. Instead of picking one place to stay, explore the very different areas of the island – around the coast head to Seminyak for high-end hotels and boutique shopping, Kuta for top-notch surfing and Lovina for a slower pace of life. Inland seek out Ubud, home of Bali’s famous rice terraces and yoga hotspot.

Plan your Bali trip in a way to be able to see the best things to do in Bali for a memorable experience. The country will charm you in ways more than one.

There are numerous places to see in Indonesia if you think beyond Bali. When you are planning your trip and trying to decide what all you should cover in the country, you should consider all the places where you can go in Indonesia.

Honeymoon Destinations in the world | Bali

Ubud

You really can’t go wrong with staying at Bisma Eight whilst in Ubud – the ultimate luxury jungle retreat set within the rainforest, offering the perfect place to unwind. Grab a fresh coconut and relax in the stunning infinity pool – you’ll never want to leave! But if you do get bored of all the chilling, get up nice and early to explore some of the island’s picture-postcard locations before the crowds arrive. The tranquillity of Tegallalang rice terraces at 7 am is one you really can’t miss and neither is the sail out into the bay at Lovina to spot dolphins frolicking in the morning light. A trip is never complete without trying local food, so try out some Balinese cuisine from these best restaurants in Ubud

Seminyak

The coast offers a mix of buzzing Seminyak, with the famous Potato Head Beach Club and an array of awesome restaurants ranging from traditional Indonesian at Bambu and BBQ at Barbecoa, to a more chilled vibe elsewhere. Head further south past the airport to find the delightful El Kabron beach club, set high on the cliffs overlooking the surfer’s paradise below, where you can enjoy a champagne-soaked romantic day in the sun.

Choosing where to stay is one of the most haunting questions of the trip, which is why here are some recommendations about where to stay in Bali

  • New Zealand

Shweta from ZestInATote says – If looking at postcard-perfect scenery all day appeals to you, then you can’t go wrong with New Zealand as a honeymoon destination. With more sheep than people living in this country, it holds appeal to the nature-loving couple and those who want to shun crowds. New Zealand tops my charts for gorgeous & yet unusual honeymoon destinations in the world, is it on yours too?

Franz Josef Glacier

I went for my honeymoon here way back in December 2007, and the beauty in some of the places are still imprinted on my mind. Be it waking up on board a ship causing around Milford sound, doing a short hike at Franz Josef Glacier, the long and picturesque ‘Southern Scenic’ drive in the South Island all the way up to Invercargill, the geothermal park at Rotorua – so many memorable experiences. We rented a car and drove across both the islands starting in Auckland, crossing over to the South Island after Wellington, reaching the southernmost city of New Zealand and ending the trip at Queenstown.

Honeymoon Destinations in the world | Geo thermal Park Rotorua

There large cities like Auckland, Christchurch, Queenstown to explore that surprisingly have managed to retain their charm. But New Zealand to my mind is more about the outdoors – where else can you experience a rainforest in the vicinity of a glacier, or go sperm whale watching just off the coast of Kaikoura, explore various national parks, or drive across well-marked scenic routes that take you to even more scenic destinations.

  • Andaman, India

Andaman & Nicobar Islands is a cluster of 572 islands forming an archipelago between India and Myanmar (previously Burma) in the Bay of Bengal. 38 of these islands permanently inhabited and provide a wonderful experience for travelers. From sparkling blue-green waters, fine white sand, luxury beachside resorts and tropical weather most of the year, Andaman Islands are no less than a paradise for honeymooners. Add to that – private exotic beaches, the spectacular sunrises and sunsets, and delicious seafood, Andaman Islands can steal every couple’s heart. What’s most amazing about Andaman beaches is that they are not impacted by mass tourism and hence the turquoise water remains unspoiled and unpolluted. The warm tropical climate encourages underwater marine life to flourish giving another reason for honeymooners to flock these islands.

havelock Andaman Island

Pooja believes Havelock Island and Neil Island are the most sought after by the honeymooners of all the islands in Andamans. The newlywed lovebirds can enjoy some idyllic time at the remote beaches of Havelock and Neil Islands and can savor the spectacular seascapes. With so many stay options, one can easily get the best match whether they are luxurious or budgeted types. Over and above that one can rent a two-wheeler to roam about on the Islands. Even island hopping is easy with the top-notch services of high-speed catamarans.

While honeymooning in Andamans, one should not miss out on the beach side romantic candlelight dinner and a couple of scuba diving session where one can spot amazing corals and Nemo fishes.

  • Ireland

Elaine says – With its awe-inspiring scenery, dramatic coastline and eclectic cities Ireland is one of the most beautiful countries on the planet and the perfect honeymoon destination.

Ireland’s natural beauty is outstanding: from exploring the hauntingly beautiful Wild Atlantic Way, standing on the edge of the Cliffs of Moher, feeling the sand in your toes on one of the beautiful beaches to climbing its dramatic peaks.

Magical Honeymoon Destinations in the World | Ireland Dromoland Castle

It’s easy to get lost in the country’s fascinating heritage and remember days gone by: there are throwbacks to Ireland’s history all across the country with the ancient sites of Brú na Bóinne and Skellig Michael among its most notable.

Not forgetting the unique Irish experiences that will make a honeymoon truly special: sip on a pint of Guinness while listening to traditional Irish music, indulge in some delicious Irish food or go horse riding on the beach. Ireland is renowned for being the land of ‘céad míle fáilte’ or, a hundred thousand welcomes, and most who pass through are drawn by the warmth of its people and the craic that they’ve had on their Irish travels.

Suggested – The best castles in Ireland.

After a day of exploring it’s hard to imagine anything more romantic than retiring to a luxurious castle or sprawling manor of which Ireland has many. For some time away from the hustle and bustle be sure to escape to a luxurious boutique hotel on one of the remote islands dotting the coastline and toast married life in front of a roaring fire and the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean. Lastly, not to miss out favorite Dublin, with some unusual things to do here as well.

Isn’t Ireland one of the most unusual honeymoon destinations in the world?
